Check this page before going up to the cabin to see if there is anything that needs to be taken up or if there is special information that you should know.
When you return from the cabin, please send an e-mail to "Aunt Jean" to let her know what needs to be added to the notes on this page. If you attach photos to your e-mail and I can post them on this page, too.

Misc Notes:
Let Jean know of anything else we need to take up to the cabin. |

Spring – Water System Instructions
1. Close the blue valve in the box in the ground at end of porch and leave closed until winter. The red valve controls water to the Knudson’s cabin, don’t do anything with it – they will take care of it. 2. Go to the water pipe at the stream. Check to see if the screen is intact and in place on the end of the pipe. Place the pipe in the water (if the Knudsons have not already done this). Make sure the pipe isn’t too close to the bottom. Secure with rocks. 3. On the way back to the cabin find the faucet on the pipe that runs to the cabin. Turn the faucet to close all the way (unless the Knudsons have already done this). 4. Close the faucet outside of bathroom window. 5. At the faucet behind the porch, place the hose in the roadway and run the water for at least 15 minutes to allow all the dirt and silt to clear from the line. 6. Get out water filter cartridge and casing from under sink. Place filter cartridge in casing and screw into place at pipe below kitchen window. 7. Turn water filter control to “on” position. 8. Open water valve right of filter below the kitchen window (knob is hanging in the cabin behind old stove). 9. Close the faucet outside kitchen window with bird handle after letting the water run for a few seconds to be sure the water is running clear. 10. Close the valve on the lower right side of the hot water tank under porch. 11. Open faucets in kitchen and bathroom and let water run until all the air is out of pipes. 12. Make sure hot water tank is full before turning on the electric circuit breaker for the hot water tank.

Fall – Instructions For Winterizing the Cabin Water System
1. Turn off electric circuit breaker for the hot water tank. It is very important to do this first! 2. Turn the control on the water filter to “off” position. 3. Remove the water filter casing and cartridge being careful not to lose the spring that fits inside the casing. 4. Wash the cartridge under hose at back of patio and place both the cartridge and casing in cupboard under sink. 5. Close water valve right of filter below the kitchen window (knob is hanging in cabin behind old stove). 6. Open faucet outside kitchen window with bird handle. 7. Open faucet outside of bathroom window. 8. Do not open faucets at back of patio. 9. Open the hot water tank valve at the lower right on the tank that is under the cabin in the locked storage area by the porch steps. 10. Go to the water pipe at the stream and lift the pipe out of the water by lifting the rocks off it, then secure the pipe at least 6 inches above the water by placing a small log or board under it. 11. On the way back to the cabin find the pipe that sticks out of the ground with the faucet on it. Turn the drain faucet all the way to open it (this drains the low spots in the system). 12. Behind the cabin in the box in the ground at end of porch, close the red valve. (This shuts off the water supply to the Knudson’s cabin. Never open the red valve – the Knudsons will do this. Open the blue valve when winterizing the cabin to drain water system when it is not in use. 13. Open the faucets inside the cabin in the kitchen, bathroom and shower.
Instructions for Winterizing the Cabin -- Continued Fireplace: 1. Clean out ashes from fireplace and replace screen in front of fireplace. 2. Place ashes in trashcan beside wood pile. Do not place paper or other materials in the ash can! Propane Room Heater: 3. Turn temperature control to “off.” 4. Turn the “on-off” knob at lower right in back to “pilot,” then push down and turn to “off” position. 5. Turn gas valve at lower left of heater to off position (crosswise to the gas line). Misc. 9. Close the valve on the large propane tank outside the cabin. Lock tank. 10. Empty all water from kettles so that they will not be damaged when water freezes. It is okay to leave water in plastic containers. 11. Put about ½ cup of antifreeze in drains in kitchen and bathroom. 12. Close window in loft and pull shade. Make sure fan in loft is turned off. 13. Close and lock all shutters. 14. Disconnect TV antenna and electric plugs. Also, unplug radio and computer. 15. Take all trash down mountain. 16. Do not leave any soft drinks in cabin (they freeze and explode). Make sure to check refrigerator and cupboards for any soft drinks and take them down the mountain with you (or drink them before you leave). |
